Like all hill stations, Matheran too offers a chance to take part in the thrilling experiences of parasailing and trekking. The beautiful mountains provide the perfect backdrop as you fly over the verdant valleys of Matheran. The lush forests of the hills of Matheran are ideal for a trekking adventure. Even though it’s physically straining, trekking is one of the most famous activities which tourists indulge in. Such adventure sports are perfect for making some memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Trek to Prabalgad Fort

This old but majestic fort can be seen from some of the famous viewpoints of Matheran. Built at a distance of 46 km from Matheran, this hilltop fortress was constructed by the powerful Bahmani Sultanate to keep a strict watch on the forts of Panvel and Kalyani.

Good to Know: The steep climb to the fort is often considered to be a great hiking trail by adventure seekers, its base being around three km from Vardoli village.

Trek to Irshalgad Fortress

Irshalgad Fort is similar to Prabalgad Fort and is often considered by historians to be the sister fort to Prabalgad. The stony ruins of this once grand fort are strewn on the top of a hill situated between Matheran and Panvel.

Good to Know: A trek up to this fort promises an exhilarating experience.

Parasailing

This is a favourite amongst adventure buffs for that instant adrenaline rush that comes with flying high over the ground, flying high enough to touch the fluffy clouds. Professional paragliding agencies ensure the complete safety of the tourists; however, this is not for the weak-hearted.

Good to Know: While up there you can have a bird’s eye view of Louisa Point, Charlotte Lake, Prabalgad Fort and many more of these enthralling sights!

Trekking

As automobiles have been banned inside the small town of Matheran, the only methods of transport are pony rides, rickshaws and on foot. Most places can be reached on foot so trekking through the trails and up the hill slopes to visit the viewpoints is a common activity here. The trail from Dasturi to Matheran is a popular hiking trail, especially in monsoons when visitors can witness waterfalls on either side of the road.

Good to Know: Another popular hiking trail is the Garbert Plateau.
